‘Auhea wale ‘oe, kamali’i o ka Pō
Eia ho’i au, kamali’i o ke ao
Wākea ka lani, Papa ka honua
No ka luna kō luna, no ka lalo kō lalo
'Auhea wale 'oe, kamali'i o ka Pō
Eia ho'i au, kamali'i o ke ao
Kō ke akua, ka'i amio
Kō lihau 'ula ka'i kupua
'Auhea wale 'oe, kamali'i o ka Pō
Eia ho'i au, kamali'i o ke au
Ho'ohōkūkalani ka wahine
Hāloa a ke kalo, Hāloa ke kanaka
'Auhea wale 'oe, kamali'i o ka Pō
Eia ho'i au, kamali'i o ke ao
Aia iā 'oe ke pauku i waena
Aia i hea ke po'o
Aia i hea ka hi'u
'Auhea wale 'oe
'Auhea wale 'oe
Kamali'i o ka Pō
(Listen, child of the night, here I am child of the light.
The sky above is Wakea, Earth below is Papa.
The heavens above, the Earth below.
All in its rightful place, Ke Kuliana keia.
The kahuna received their enlightenment,
Their mana from our ancient gods.
They were the chosen ones.
They spoke the words of the ancient gods,
they taught our laws and maintained our traditions, all in its rightful place.
Ho'ohōkūkalani, the royal mother
Gave birth to Hāloa, the kalo, then to Hāloa, the man.
The elder gave life to the junior lineage
All in its rightful place.
Listen, child of the night, here I am child of the light
You have there with you the middle section of the fish.
But where is the head? And where is the tail?
Where did you come from? Where will you go?
Listen! Is all in its rightful place?
Listen!
Listen!
Child of the Night
Wakea is the mythical ancestor of all Hawaiians. Papa is the father of the earth, the prevailing deity of the gods and goddesses of nature. The first child was Hāloa, the taro plant or the earth. The second child is Hāloa, the progenitor of all peoples on earth, the mythical child. According to legend, the second child has the responsibility to care for the first. Without the first, the second will not exist.
