Kaleo's Bio

Kaleo' Story
My mission is to inspire and motivate people to make the world a better place through helping people to open to their hearts, to know that we are all okay and perfect in who we are - to truly love ourselves.  From here, we can love each other and know that everything around us will fall into place.  I use my voice, music, and dance to share the Aloha Spirit, the intangible force of Divine Love that is the foundation of everything "Hawaiian".

I have been singing for as long as I can remember, often singing along to records as a young child.  I began my formal training in my early teens after two different doctors told my mother that I had an unusually large opening in her throat, which they said was characteristic of exceptional singers.  My parents were very generous, providing vocal training that continued on into my adult life.  I also discovered my love for dance at an early age, studying ballet and then continuing as an adult to other forms of dance that included belly dancing and traditional Hawaiian hula.  Today, I now have over 30 years of vocal and dance training experience and have just released my first solo CD, Ulana, The Way of the Heart .

I began performing in my teens, first singing popular songs.  Then I went on to study classical music and opera for several years,  majoring in them in college for two years.  I completed my training at the Academy of Dramatic Art, where I moved more into musical theatre.  After college, I lived in New York City; sang popular songs and appeared professionally in cabaret and nightclubs including some of the most popular comedy clubs of the 70's.  I was a regular at Catch a Rising Star and also sang at the Improv.  At that time, some of today's most successful comics  were just starting out in these clubs.  I performed with many of them, including as the opening act on a college circuit with Jerry Seinfeld.   I appeared in the title roll of a Florida production of the musical, Mame,  recorded demos for composers.  In 1992, I was the vocalist on the recording Mother Earth Dance by Jack Conrad.

While in New York in the early 80's, I explored the chants of several different spiritual traditions, including the Eastern Indian and Hindu as well as the the Native American.  I studied and worked with several different Native Americans teachers, including Oh Shinnah Fastwolf, Beautiful Painted Arrow (Joseph Rael), and Twylah Nitsch.

Twenty years ago, I began my study of the ancient Hawaiian tradition.  I feel very fortunate to have received extensive training in Hawaiian chant and hula from traditional Hawaiian Masters (Kumu Hula) both in Hawai’i and on the mainland, including Keith Awai, Aloha Dalire and Uncle George Na'ope.  The hulas that I now share are from Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, a Kumu Hula, healer and kahuna.  In addition to performing as a soloist, I have also been a member of the Na 'Olapa O Ka La hula troupe in Florida and Halau Hula Na Lei Kupua O Kaua'i under Kumu Hula, Susan Pa'iniu Floyd, in Kaua'i, Hawai'i.  Today, I continue to perform solo for private parties and organizations throughout the US and Canada.

In 2001, I added harp and celtic songs to my repertoire; and in 2005, I completed my training as a certified music practitioner through the Music For Healing and Transition Program (MHTP).  These added skills allow me to share my voice and music therapeutically in hospitals, nursing homes and with those in hospice in the final stages of transition.  I continue to comfort family members through my voice and music at funerals and memorial services

I am also now performing at house concerts - a venue I truly enjoy because of its intimate atmosphere.  I love to connect and interact with my audience; and this is the perfect setting in which to sing, share and "talk story" with those before me.

O ka Maluhia no me 'oe! - May peace be with you!

Aloha!
